Novice Clawhammer Banjo Class-Shona Carr
This is a class is for the novice level clawhammer banjo player who wants a refresher with the basics of right hand rhythm (including drop thumb), help with playing simple melody and how to play with a fiddler in a jam. We will use a fun learn by ear approach designed to help you get the music and rhythm in your head, improve your musicality and get you playing new tunes and songs quickly! You will expand on your basic “bum ditty” rhythm, learn chords, and a bunch of commonly played Old Time tunes and songs, so you can play in jams and have fun with Old Time Music!
Intermediate Clawhammer Banjo Class-Terri McMurray
This class is for banjo players who can play at a slow-moderate speed, are familiar with playing in double C and G tuning, have experience with simple melody, basic chords and bum ditty rhythm. In addition to learning a number tunes, we will also focus on improving rhythm, adding in drop thumb, various right hand "moves". You will learn techniques including slides, hammer-on’s, pull offs, how to learn a tune by ear and play with a fiddler in a jam.
Advanced Clawhammer Banjo-Paul Brown and Janie Rothfield
You will work with both Paul and Janie throughout the weekend (though not at the same time!)
This class is for clawhammer banjo players who can play in a jam at speed, in multiple keys (GDAC) and tunings (Double C, G and modal tunings), and who are able to pick up tunes easily by ear. The class will focus on new tunings, playing up the neck, chordal and right hand rhythm and melody playing techniques to get you to the next level in your playing. In addition to working with well known tunes, you will learn a selection of unique traditional and newly made tunes too!
Advanced Old Time Fiddle-Paul Brown and Janie Rothfield
You will work with both Paul and Janie throughout the weekend (though not at the same time!)
This class is for the fiddler who already has a good repertoire of tunes in a variety of keys and can play at a medium to fast speed in a jam. Paul and Janie will focus on more advanced rhythms, drive and phrasing of the bow, melodic intricacies. Paul and Janie will also teach a variety of tunes from different regions ncluding Kentucky, Virginia and North Carolina.
Intermediate Old Time Guitar-Kellie Allen
This class is for people who can play the basic chords of G, C, D, A at a moderate tempo and who are looking to improve their skills for playing guitar with old time music-accompanying a fiddler or a song. Kelli will focus on helping you with your chord changes (adding in new chords and some substitutions for your old chords!), working on bass runs, and how to get more out of your right hand rhythm.
