Pittsboro NC Old Time Music Camp

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Feb 22-24, 2019

Intermediate-Advanced Fiddle with Janie Rothfield
This class is for intermediate-advanced level players with 3 or more years experience playing and who can play at a medium speed in a jam.   Janie  will concentrate on old time bowing and rhythm as well as different fiddle tunings.  You will learn a variety of wonderful old (and some newer) tunes from many old time sources -including Uncle Norm Edmonds, Tommy Jarrell, Snake Chapman and more!
Intermediate-Advanced Clawhammer Banjo with Joe Newberry
This class is designed for clawhammer players who can play in a jam at speed, in multiple keys (GDAC) and tunings (Double C, G and modal tunings), and who are able to pick up tunes easily by ear.

Our class will feature a mix of famous and not so famous (although they should be) tunes.  Both are important. While I'm excited to show you some new tunes, I am equally as excited to use familiar tunes as a springboard for some techniques that have served me well.  Topics I will cover to that end include: "Putting Drive in Your Playing," "Rhythm Tips," "The Fifth String as a Melody Vehicle," and "The Under-used Second Fret." I also will give you tips on how to match your playing with a fiddler's style, as well as playing in a string band setting.  If there is interest, I can also share some banjo songs.

Tape recorders are very handy when approaching a class such as this, as I will be teaching by ear and not from tablature.  Make sure to bring extra strings, because we'll be playing hard, and strings do break. And, don't forget to bring an electronic tuner and a capo.

Guitar/Songs with Jim Watson

This guitar class is for folks who can play the basic chords of G, C, D, and A at a moderate tempo and who are looking to improve their skills for playing guitar with old time music to accompany a fiddler or an old time country song. The class will feature work on putting more drive and rhythm in your right hand, chord changes, bar chords, bass runs, playing in waltz time, and some pretty handy capo tricks. We’ll also put in some time on the Maybelle Carter “church lick”, so pack a thumb pick along with your flat pick. You will also be doing some singing and learn some great old time country songs.
