Janie's Jumpstart Austin Weekend Camp offers classes in Old Time and Bluegrass Fiddle and Clawhammer Banjo. This is a unique opportunity to learn from and spend quality time with 3 great musicians and experienced teachers who will help you get your playing to the next level in your playing! This camp is for the intermediate level with 3-4 years experience who wants not only learn great tunes, but how to play them better with a focus on musicality and rhythm to their playing.
Janie's Jumpstart promises small class settings of a MAXIMUM of 8 students per instructor so there is alot of attention to the individual needs of each student with multiple classes and jamming opportunities with the instructors. The camp is held in a private home, with plenty of room for classes, meals, socializing and jamming. Accomodations are NOT included-there are a number of local B&B's and hotels within 10-15 minutes of the camp.
The goal of Janie's Jumpstart Camp is to help you get to the next level in your playing and, of course, to have a lot of fun! Special attention will be paid to sharing techniques to help you play better including rhythm, intonation, musicality that makes traditional fiddle music come to life!
In addition to small group classes, there will be band/jam sessions to help you learn how to “play well with others”, and opportunities to have a mini class with the other teachers. Janie, Blaine and Susan love to teach and love to play so this weekend will be a whole lot of fun too!
Questions you may have!
Is this Janie's Jumpstart Weekend Camp for me?
This camp is designed for intermediate/experienced fiddle (violine) players. Prior knowledge of the fiddling style is not required. The focus of Janie's Jumpstart is not just about learning tunes, but to also learn and use techniques and musical strategies to get you to the next level in your playing-regardless of ability or level! And of course, to have a lot of FUN!
Within the small group and individual sessions with instructors, you will have a tremendous opportunity to work with and learn from your teacher for the weekend. In addition to the individual instrument classes, there will be opportunities to play and jam with our Jumpstart staff and assistants throughout the weekend.
This is not a "learn as many tunes as possible" camp, although you will learn many tunes-it is more about playing the tunes better!
How will I know what class to be in?
We will make sure that you are in the right class by using information you provide in the registration form and by talking, listening and watching (via video or skype) with each student prior to camp. Georgia asked me if I could play the fiddle and click my heels in the air-I said "Sure" and I started walking down from the cabin playing St. Anne's Reel. I heard Georgia say "2" and up I went! She got the shot as is-no photoshop here!
